Summary: Temporary skin redness caused by increased blood flow to the capillaries.
Erythema refers to visible redness of the skin resulting from increased blood flow (hyperemia) in the superficial capillaries. It is not a diagnosis on its own but a clinical sign associated with a wide range of conditions, from irritation and allergic reactions to infections and inflammatory skin disorders. Erythema can be localized or widespread and may appear after cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels, laser treatments, or microneedling. The redness typically fades as the underlying cause resolves and blood flow returns to normal.
