Preservatives are ingredients added to cosmetic products to prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms, thereby protecting product safety, stability, and shelf-life. Without preservatives, water-containing cosmetics would be highly vulnerable to contamination. Only preservatives listed in Annex V of the EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 are authorized for use in the European Union.
