Humectants are a subclass of skin conditioning agents that work by attracting and retaining water in the outermost layers of the skin (stratum corneum). Because they are hygroscopic, humectants draw moisture either from the air or from deeper layers of the skin, helping to maintain hydration and skin softness. They are commonly used in moisturizers, serums, and masks to prevent dryness and support healthy barrier function.
