UV absorbers are ingredients added to cosmetic formulations to stabilize the product itself, not necessarily to protect the skin. They work by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation—typically UVA or UVB wavelengths—that can degrade the formula’s color, scent, or active ingredients over time. UV absorbers are commonly used in products like perfumes, creams, and color cosmetics to improve shelf life and prevent photodegradation. They are distinct from UV filters, which are intended to protect the skin and are used in sunscreens.
